Carole Goguen, Psy.D.


Dr. Carole Goguen is the Director of the Traumatic Stress Treatment Center. She is a Licensed Psychologist who has extensive clinical experience. She has received specialized training in the assessment and treatment of traumatic reactions as well as in forensic psychology. In addition to California licensure, Dr. Goguen is credentialed by The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.

EDUCATION:

Dr. Goguen received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles. She received her Masters of Arts in Psychology and Doctor of Psychology from Pepperdine University. Dr. Goguen is Credentialed by The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.

Dr. Goguen received specialized training in forensic psychology during a year-long, American Psychological Association accredited, pre-doctoral internship at Patton State Hospital. Patton State Hospital is a maximum-security state forensics medical facility that provides mental health evaluation and treatment to criminally and civilly committed persons. There she developed skills in assessment and treatment of severe mentally illness with individuals with legal commitments including not guilty by reason of insanity, incompetent to stand trial, prison to hospital transfers, parolees, and sex offenders.

Dr. Goguen held the position of Associate Director for Research and Education at the Executive Division of the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The National Center for PTSD was created in 1989 within the Department of Veterans Affairs and is a world leader in research and education programs focusing on PTSD and other psychological and medical consequences of traumatic stress. It was at the National Center for PTSD that Dr. Goguen received two years of focused post-doctoral training assessing and treating posttraumatic syndromes and various trauma-related problems including anxiety, depression, guilt/shame, and disrupted relationships.

EXPERIENCE:

Dr. Goguen has extensive experience providing psychotherapy for both women and men who have experienced sexual and physical traumas including rape, childhood sexual abuse, assault/battery, combat, motor vehicle accidents, and national disasters. Dr. Goguen merges her trauma and forensic experience when performing forensic assessments for the possible impact of traumatic reactions in civil and criminal cases. Additionally, she performs pre-employment and annual incumbent psychological evaluations of federal police officers for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.

Dr. Goguen is a member of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies, American Psychological Association Trauma Psychology Division and American Psychology-Law Society.
